Open Enrollment — It’s almost that time of year again! During the last few months of the year, you’ll be able to make a change or purchase new health insurance without a qualifying event. In this article we’ll go over the basics of Open Enrollment to help make this sometimes stressful process much easier. We’ll cover: Finding enrollment assistance, important dates, and how to prepare for open enrollment.

Schedule an Appointment With an Insurance Expert

When Is Open Enrollment?

Individual Health Insurance Open Enrollment

Annual Open Enrollment runs from November 1st to January 15th and is the only time you can purchase individual health insurance without a qualifying event. If you own a business or do not have employer-provided insurance this is the time period where you can explore new insurance coverage options. Book a call here to speak with Colorado Health Concierge and how we can help you during this process.

Medicare Open Enrollment

If you are seeking to change Medicare Advantage Plans and Prescription Drug Coverage, Open Enrollment begins October 15th and ends December 7th. Renee specializes in Medicare coverage and is now available to discuss your options. Feel free to book an appointment with her today.

If you’re turning 65 soon, you may be wondering how this applies to you. To learn more about Medicare, you can read more here. The enrollment process can be a little different for everyone, so be sure to check with your Social Security Administration three months before your expected start date of coverage to be sure everything is in order.  Most individuals will need to actively enroll in Part A and Part B through SSA.gov/Medicare in this three month window. If you fall into one of the categories below you will be automatically enrolled in Medicare.

  • You are already receiving Social Security benefits (at least four months before start)
  • Receive U.S. Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) benefits (at least four months before start)
  • You are under age 65 but have a Social Security disability for 24 months
  • Have amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease or ESRD)

How to Prepare for Open Enrollment

Here are quick tips to make Open Enrollment seamless:

  1. Mark your calendar early. Map out some time now with plenty of time before Open Enrollment ends to make sure you have adequate time to explore new plans.

  2. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Many people go through the open enrollment process alone and opt into coverage they don’t fully understand. We’re here to help so you don’t have any lapses or gaps in coverage!

  3. Make a list of priorities. Schedule an appointment with one of our insurance brokers. Then make a list of your medical needs for the upcoming year. Whether your priority is low deductible, first-dollar coverage with co-pays for doctor visits and prescriptions, major medical coverage, or a comprehensive high deductible health savings account style plan – these are all things to consider.
